Winter arrives in Yuan Yang like ink settling on paper. Before the sky has fully woken, mist rises from the valley floor, drifting over villages and around the shoulders of the mountains until the terraces appear only in fragments, half-hidden, half-imagined. Then the first gold light breaks through cloud, and the water remembers it — paddy after paddy turning to mirror, the whole mountainside waking at once.
Carved into the Ailao Mountains over thirteen centuries by the Hani people, these terraces are more than an engineering achievement. They remain a living cultural landscape where forests, villages, water channels, and rice fields continue to exist in remarkable balance. During the flooded winter season, the paddies become immense mirrors, transforming the mountainsides into an ever-changing canvas of light and reflection.

Heavy cloud and drifting mist set the stage. When the sun breaks through, shafts of light sweep across the terraces, illuminating only fragments of the landscape before shifting again moments later. Success depends on anticipation, careful positioning, and an understanding of how light moves through the valleys.
At dawn, mist drifts through the valleys, simplifying the layered terraces into quiet, painterly compositions — as close as photography gets to ink painting, and no two mornings hold it the same way. It gathers, scatters, and shifts, sometimes hiding a village whole, sometimes revealing a single terrace line.
Winter is the season when the terraces are filled with water, creating thousands of natural mirrors across the mountainsides. In calm conditions they reflect colour, cloud, and changing light with extraordinary clarity, transforming an ancient agricultural landscape into one of the world's most remarkable abstract photographic subjects.
The Hani, Yi, Dai, and Yao communities continue traditions that have shaped these mountains for generations. Morning markets, village pathways, farmers at work, and everyday encounters provide opportunities for thoughtful human-interest photography, adding scale, atmosphere, and cultural depth to the landscape.

Steve Chong has returned to Yuan Yang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for more than twenty-five photographic expeditions, documenting the terraces across changing seasons, weather, and light. Years of field experience have built an intimate understanding of the landscape—when mist is likely to form, how the first light travels across each valley, and which viewpoints offer their strongest compositions under different conditions.
Rather than following a fixed schedule, Steve adapts each day's photography to the weather. If conditions favour reflections, we stay with reflections. If dramatic light develops unexpectedly, plans change accordingly. This flexibility, built upon years of returning to the same landscape, is often the difference between coming home with good photographs and exceptional ones.
Throughout the expedition, Steve provides practical guidance in composition, lens selection, exposure, visual storytelling, and fieldcraft, helping participants respond confidently to the changing conditions that make Yuan Yang one of the world's finest landscapes to photograph.
