Pacu Jawi is one of West Sumatra's most distinctive traditions. Across flooded rice fields, pairs of bulls surge through the mud while jockeys cling to their tails, balancing strength, instinct and skill in a spectacle that lasts only moments. Every race unfolds differently, demanding anticipation as much as reflex.
Beyond the fields lies another story. Minangkabau villages, traditional architecture and the quiet rhythm of everyday life reveal a culture shaped by generations of heritage. From weathered faces and working hands to the bold flavours of Padang cuisine, the journey offers a rich visual narrative that extends far beyond the race itself.

For a few exhilarating seconds, bulls thunder through flooded rice fields as jockeys balance behind them with remarkable control and instinct. Every race is different, rewarding anticipation, timing and the ability to recognise a decisive moment before it disappears.
Before sunrise at Pasir Jambak Beach, fishermen launch their traditional boats through the surf beneath the first light of day. Waves, voices and coordinated movement create a scene rich in rhythm, offering endless opportunities for storytelling through light and gesture.
West Sumatra reveals itself through its people. Village markets, quiet conversations, weathered faces and unhurried daily routines offer intimate moments that speak of a culture quietly shaped by tradition, resilience and a strong sense of community.
The sweeping rooflines of the Rumah Gadang are among Indonesia's most recognisable architectural forms. Intricate timber craftsmanship, symbolic design and a living matrilineal tradition provide a remarkable setting for both environmental portraits and architectural photography.
Few places celebrate food as generously as West Sumatra. Shared meals of rendang, gulai and countless regional specialities become part of the journey itself, bringing photographers together around the table after rewarding days in the field.

Steve Chong has been returning to West Sumatra since the early 2000s, drawn by the unique character of Pacu Jawi and the culture that surrounds it. Years of field experience have given him an intimate understanding of the race, its rhythm, and the moments that define it.
Success at Pacu Jawi is rarely about camera settings alone. It begins with knowing where to stand, anticipating the movement of the bulls, and recognising the decisive instant before it unfolds. Throughout the journey, Steve offers practical guidance while leaving each photographer room to develop their own way of seeing.
